Kinda an odd question here I guess.
Was wondering if anyone could point me towards a source of old "backbone.na" files for Fidonet? Maybe from around 90-94 or so when the net was really cooking. I'm trying to remind myself how many echos there were and what the various topics were. My memory is fuzzy but I remember quite a few.

I don't have any old files, sadly enough but the files below are the current ones. Hope this helps.
Echomail backbone list is here:
http://www.filegate.net/echolist/ELST2011.ZIP
The above is the list of all echomail areas updated weekly I believe.
For file echos (archives), you can download this file: http://www.filegate.net/fg_worf/filegate.zxx
The above file does not get updated very often as we don't add file areas as often as we add message echos :)

1998.

The one I really miss from back then is the Filking Echo!
For the curious, per this file there were 1,775 echos in the list on Dec 5, 1998. Bob Hoffman was the most prolific moderator.

you should note that that list is the echolist... not the backbone.na list... the echolist lists echo areas for numerous FTNs... not just fidonet... and just because an echo is listed in the echolist doesn't mean it is actually alive with traffic...
as for bob hoffman, he was the head of another FTN and managed all that net's echos as well as the gateway(s) between it and other FTNs...
Understood. It was the only historical record I could find. It doesn't appear an archive of old backbone.na files exists. If one does, I'd love to take a look.

Which FTN was that? Just curious. There is a google doc here listing all the old FTNs, and it's fun to learn more about them. We're trying to crowdsource the info to complete it.
