Trump wants the EU to completely lose this trade war.

The negotiators aren't cooperating with that; by publicly announcing the 50% tariff, he hopes that the weaker politicians in the EU will be willing to surrender.

Meanwhile, it has become known that he has already shifted the effective date to July 9th. I'd almost say it's a shame, but the point is: nobody wins with this nonsense. However, it would be great if Trump would crash and burn so spectacularly that people in the US start to realize that his sabotage of world trade needs to end.
