    that you trust that are on a key raises the trust in that key... it is like you meeting me on the street and we don't know each other at all
    but if you have five friends vouch for me, your level of trust in me increases... if i have five friends who vouch for you, my level of trust in you increases... this trusting also increases for our friends as they now have another positive link to us and each other...

    This sounds like the narrative that Mark Z wrote for Facebook :)
