What's up with Magicka BBS? Is it a Telegard hack? It looks and functions pretty good. It's not a total piece of shit like Synchronet.
I visited Happyland BBS, the home of Magicka BBS Software, and it was cool. Thesoftware, whether it's a forum hack or not, presents itself nicely, at leaston the HQ board. They've added some great stock ansi, so any stock board wouldlook nice right from the start.
The only thing I don't like about Magicka so far is that it has no messagepointer date, which is something I enjoy using. But aside from that, thisthing has a nice editor and a great interface (or hack!)
magickabbs.com:2023 <- That's Happyland. Worth checking out! Let met knowyour impression of it. (It's not my BBS - I don't even know who the author/sysop is.)
Did you know Synchronet has a command-mode that makes it look and act
just like Renegade?
You should checkout apam's new endevour. Magicka is not longer
supported, but he is now writing Talisman BBS and he used a lot of code from Magicka.
Certainly there are many Synch sysops who have done awesome stuff with their boards. I appreciate all BBSs. Being a user on a Synch board is a somewhat new experience for me. I never saw Synch boards or even Syncterm in the 90s at all. I found out about it in 2010, so the message reading/editing systems are not what I'm used to with Renegade/Mystic.
607. We had a handful of WC! boards that I didn't enjoy for the same reason; the message system was not easy enough.
Wildcat had a shitty UI. At least around 90-95. Yellow, cyan, bright whit It hurts my eyes just to think about it. I logged into someones Wildcat BB few weeks ago and it was so customized I didn't even recgonize it. I also remember it being really expensive. Not as bad as Major BBS, but pretty ba

That sucks! Magicka had a nice feel - despite the fact that it lacked thosethings we were just talking about previosuly with Synch: No pointer date ormessage area toggle (that I could find.)
But I bet Talisman will be even better. It will be interesting to see how/ifdjatropine adapts his Magicka BBS to Talisman.
There were a few reasons why it was called "Wildcrap".
Apparently getting Wildcat to do anything with Fido/FTN's was so convoluted.
By "not supported" just means I'm not planning to add new features etc. I'll still help people who have trouble with it, accept PRs etc.
You're right about the date on pointers, I only had setting pointers by message number, which was pretty dumb. Talisman has setting message pointers by date instead.
It did have area subscription, but that was mostly for offline mail, although in the new scan you could scan only by subscribed areas.
BBSs used to be way more prolific, so I'll assume there were Synch
sysops backin the old days but just not in my calling range/area code.

It's interesting software to run. It's capiable of a lot, but you gotta embrace Javascript to really customize it. I think Mystic is awesome.
I neversaw a Mystic board until a few months ago when because of Covid I startedfarting around on BBS' again. Mystic reminds me a lot of
Renegade or Celerity-- and thats a good thing.
Glad to see you posting back on SciNet apam. Your node went dark a few months back.

I don't know if there is much need to switch if he likes magicka the way it is, if there's any horrible bugs I will accept PRs, and anyone is
free to fork Magicka and continue it if they wish. Besides, some people
in this hobby run software that hasn't been updated in 20+ years.

Wildcat sysops should explain everything better so guys like me can
figure out how to use their boards properly. Seriously, I just don't get it. Conferences? Ok. But then where are the message bases? Some WC!
sysops call message bases "conferences," but then others are like us and
a conference is just a conference. All this confusion can be yours for just $249, unless you want the Enterprise Edition for only $2599 plus shipping :)
Now I'm interested in it. I have used Javascript before. I should try Synchronet as a sysop and see if I can give it all the customization needed togive it a true Renegade/Mystic feel.

You could purchase TBBS for thousands and have private or flagged messages stored in "cubbies". As in, cubbyholes. And yes, that phrase was hardcoded.
Thats funny. I downloaded a bunch of old Boardwatch magazine scans from Paulie's board and get a real kick out of the old TBBS and MajorBBS ads.
I never even saw a TBBS back in the day. I wouln't even know what they loo like.
Oh mannnnnn now theres a trip... Boardwatch. I remember that fondly, almost asfondly as the cheerleader I've been pleasuring myself to until
I found out recently here it was some jolly bastard peddling Commodore parts.

I'm glad I can help!
I feel as though I'm owed several boxes of kleenex and cotton socks.
You would think the sock would serve double purpose. What kind of shitty soc are you using.

TBBS was the holy grail of something that was just an absolute
convoluted contraption to even make it start-up properly. It was nice
when it ran, but you had the typical late-80's, early 90's UPPERCASE EVERYWHERE on messages, files, plug-ins, etc. Netmail for example, was a seperate directory that you quite seriously had to spell out as "NET
MAIL" otherwise the Fidonet componentwouldn't see it.
It was brutal... but brutal enough that I loved it. Like a good mistress that does everything sexually that your loyal wife Renegade won't do, or you wouldn't dream of kissing on the lips afterwards.

The ones with the Commodore logo... the best kind.
This has been hashed over 100s of times on plenty of FTNs, but BOARDWATCH was super cool until the owners picked BBS sides and ran it down the drain. IMO the editor of that mag was a........
However, I do remember reading them every month when I first got into BBSing. That was before I found 'a scene'.
In the January 1994 issue, page 40, is a long article talking about the Pla Connect "Fidonet over Satellite" service. Which would have been my dream t have back then. The article is crazy in depth about how it all worked. It

What was the backbone like back then? When I was on Fidonet back in the day, Ionly had a few echos. I remember them being very active, but I would imagine Iwas missing a lot by not being subscribed to very many.

Net 256 has it as well, it definitely was pretty cool. Suddenly you got
a whole lot more files and messages! I had to quickly upgrade my 20M
drive to a 100M with bad sectors that I partitioned around (it was
free). Then came the hudson message limit and suddenly I had to upgrade
my BBS. Fun times though!
Shit like that kept us sharp and wanting to learn. Today, you vitually haveinternet access anywhere you go. I was on a cruise 2 years ago in
the middleof the ocean and was getting 50meg download speed. We were facetimingeveryone: "I'm video calling you from the middle of the sea".
No one has to work for connectivity any more :(
The last cruise I went on which was like 3-4 years ago the internet was cheap and fast so no need for the AP. They didn't even care about the
input selection on the TVs now either so no need for IR hacking. Where's the challenge people?!??!?!? I'm on a cruise!!!! How can I relax if I
don't have something to hack in order to relax!!!
