    Wildcat had a shitty UI. At least around 90-95. Yellow, cyan, bright white. It hurts my eyes just to think about it. I logged into someones Wildcat BBS a few weeks ago and it was so customized I didn't even recgonize it. I also remember it being really expensive. Not as bad as Major BBS, but pretty bad.

    It still costs thousands. Want a 16 node BBS its like $2000 to get your foot in the door. Want their scripting language? Thats another $300-400. Want to be able to use FidoNet? Thats another $100-200. Want to upgrade from a major version (who decides when its a major vs minor version?) Thats another $200-400. Want support? You can't get it unless you pay them by the hour.

    Its still a yellow mess, but its very capable these days. It used to be a hard coded piece of trash for the longest time but I think with v5 they added scripting, configurable prompts, etc.

    I still find their concept of combined areas convoluted, but thats obviously subjective.

    I understand its a business for them but I am shocked that hobbiest BBS people spend so much money on it.

    I assumed the people still running Wildcat had versions they registered long long ago. If there are still people paying 2k for a Wildcat license.... thats just nuts.

    Looking at their current pricing.... which is loaded from a TXT file no less -- a 2 node site is $249, and 16 nodes is $1495. Fidonet is $199 for "unlimited lines" whatever that means these days.

    They really are just running with the same pricing from back in the the day. I guess the good news it's all cheaper now because of inflation! $249 in 1995 is $425 in today's dollars.

    The fact that they are still charging period is nuts. Synchronet and Mystic (among others) can run circles around it and they are free as in beer.

    Wildcrap may of been a headache for some, but my more-cowbell friend, you are really not a true experimental Sysop until you have spent an entire weekend getting TBBS working from start to finish.

    The only BBS program I know of that came with a VHS instructional video.

    All menus run through a compiler, but give the capabilities of a Dbase-3 application.

    I heard MajorBBS/Worldgroup was a cult-like experience to install as well.

    The only BBS program I know of that came with a VHS instructional video.

    There were a few 64 bbs programs that either came with an instructional LP or an audio cassette.

    I think I was reading about the MajorBBS revival project where they plan to give away 256 user editions of MBBS v6.25.

    On the one hand, free BBS! On the other hand...why the bizarre limitation of 256 users? *shrug*

    Maybe it's 8-bit? 0-255.
