I played around with a LOT of text adventures back in the day, but I
don't think I ever did more than 'look at' Zork, and never touched
2 or 3...
I've definitely put some time in Zork I, II and Return To Zork but never tried Zork III or Beyond Zork yet. I can see myself at some point because
You can actually play the 1st 3 Zork's online on DoorParty...as well as picking them up with a bunch of others from several websites. Leather Goddess of Phobos & Hitchhiker's Guide are some more you can play online.

I loved Zork but never played them until the 90s when Return to Zork was building up hype. I was confounded by how to progress in the first part for literally years, as I don't recall it ever explicitly telling you it is of the old Adventure inspired treasure hunt variety, so I was approaching it more like a Sierra or Lucasarts adventure game and at
some point the breadcrumbs kind of just... end. Once I finally figured that out I beat it quickly, and then hunkered down and beat 2 and 3 in very short order. I tried but could never get into any of the others (Beyond Zork and Zork Zero, mainly) though I did end up playing quite a few of the other Infocom text adventures. Good stuff. <3

There's a gap in a true semi-guided adventure game. I think MUDs try to
do this but not very well...it would be neat to have something akin to an Ansi-enabled MUD type game. Something like Leisure Suit Larry. Just make it multiplayer and dumb the graphics down to ansi.
That is a great idea, probably a bit too much for one author to write,
but if a few people piled in, it would be great.
Delving further into fantasy land, maybe all we need is an engine that
you plug scripts into.

OT, but this gave me a bit of an idea.
I love scummvm-enabled adventure games. Sierra SCI games in particular, but also LucasArts games.
BBS games tend to be one of three types: Button mash LORD types, strategy/trader types, and MUDs.

Anyway just rambling. :P
There is no horror here to run in.
You stand in a puddle of your own urine, cowering from the fearsome Phlash. There is a ladder leading up to the outside world. You urine drains into a small grate over a hole just large enough to squeeze
through below you.
Contemplate why we park on a driveway and drive on a parkway
Congratulations, you blew up the evil Z-machine! The world as you know it dissolves around you revealing a far more hideous reality. Without the ever- watching eye of Infocom's AI to keep order, you find a society in utter disarray. With visions of soccer moms fighting over megapacks of toilet paper in grocery stores and trolling each other's Facebook feeds with political memes, you close your eyes and pray for a grue attack to bring this all to a merciful end. The adventure continues in Zork II:
The Wizard of Wuhan!
Why do I have a feeling this will end up in Darkness 2!
Yeah they are pretty much on every possible platform you can imagine old and new. I was recently playing it on my Trash-80 for the feel of that keyboard.
Another adventure series I want to get into at some point is the whole Scott Adams set. Probably need to play them an old VIC20, TRS-80 or C64 just to enjoy the atmosphere of it.
I was thinking about some sort of event relating to scavengers hording toilet paper. :P

working, and I didn't want to use DoorParty.
There's actually an old Z-machine interpreter that I used to play withIf you find it holler :)
in the 90s tht was extremely easy to get setup but I can't remember (or find) the name of it right now. Argh.

I played with a z-machine thing but the text was never displayed properly when doing it via bbs.
what OS you're on, but someone even made a special port of Frotz specifically to be used this way (for Linux):
Yeah, there are some methods for sending DOS I/O out which would let you use a normal interpreter. This is actually well documented in the
NetFoss user guide here: http://pcmicro.com/netfoss/guide/. Not sure

So I was poking around with FrotzDoor again. If i run the zmachine from shell it works great, but when I launch it from mystic it's completely screwed up. I even tried the stty business setting 80x25 prior to executing and it still doesnt' display properly.
Admittedly I'm late to the thread here. I'm going to try runningPlease do as i'm also running 64 bit linux. I'm sure we can figure it out amongst us =)
something like this in linux. I'll let you know if I have success.
I just installed frotz and zonk 1/2/3 on my BBS last night...
Please do as i'm also running 64 bit linux. I'm sure we can figure it out amongst us =)
To launch the game, the script sets the TERM to ansi-bbs (google synchronet termcap linux to find instructions to get this working), cd's into the correct directory, and runs
stty cols 80 rows 25 && /doors/zork/frotz -F -R $2 ZORK$1.DAT
Ok, I got zork working. I used FrotzDoor and downloaded the zork data
Hrm I must be missing something because adding the /etc/termcap file didn't change anything afaict.
What's the issue you're running into specifically?the screen is all squished together.
if you want to see what i mean hop on my BBS, go to D- Doors -> %- More Doors, then run $-Adventureland
The prompts are overwriting the first character of the text and things
are appearing in weird places on the screen.
Also, where'd you get the adventureland data files?http://www.msadams.com/downloads/advgames.zip

Actually I think that last one was wrong i think it came from http://www.ifarchive.org/indexes/if-archive/scott-adams/games/zcode/
I still owe your board a call, I'll dial in a few mins. Thanks for the link here btw. Thanks for the note about the more doors menu, that apparently has been
Hmm, I changed from just TERM=ansi-bbs to export TERM=ansi-bbs and it looks a bit better now.
If that doesn't work, it must be something to do with the ansi-bbs term setting. Did you follow that synchronet wiki page exactly for the
termcap?

Well I think so, but I'll poke around it some more. Interesting. I like what you did there on the save directory, I honestly wasn't sure what the save game filenames were going to be and if people would clobber each others saves.
You are on 64 bit linux right, which OS?
I'm on ubuntu 18.04
So I just double checked, and when I run tic terminfo nothing happens,
the terminfo file is the same as it was when i downloaded it. (I did a diff of the two files)
I can't remember how I got this all set up honestly. I'll research it later tonight.figure anything out?

installed, and I launch a script to fire up the frotz binary. I have the frotz binary Marisa G compiled and it works fine.
Just curious. Has anyone in BBS land ever played Zork I II III or beyond?
